The research of this paper illustrates the power of Andrei Tarkovsky’s costume design in his 1972 psychological science fiction thriller, Solaris. Bridging the sociopolitical climate of Soviet Russia with the westernized scope of fashion in culture, this essay develops how Solaris’ costume design aids insight into not only the film’s narrative but the ideological makeup of its surrounding Soviet society.
